E is for ePublication

An ePublication, or ePub, simply put, is a digital publication. Most commonly in regards to eBooks, an ePub can also be reports, catalogs, magazines or any other materials that are created with the purpose of being distributed and consumed digitally.

There are a variety of devices which can read ePubs, and some which require their own format. Generally, computers, smartphones, tablets or specialty e-Readers like the Kindle or Kobo are used.

ePublications can be designed to have a “fixed format,” meaning each page looks the same on any device you view it on, or a “fluid layout,” which means that the text and images flow automatically from page to page, based on the size of the font chosen by the reader, and the device that is being used. Each format has it’s perks and drawbacks and, if you are planning on working with a designer to create a publication that will be viewed digitally, it is very important that you discuss your options !
